1st Sleep Medicine and Polysomnography Course, 2014

The Sleep Medicine and Polysomnography Course, conducted by the Sleep Medicine and Research Center, King Abdulaziz University Hospital, in collaboration with Jeddah Sleep Club under the umbrella of Saudi Society of internal medicine ran over a course of five consecutive days.
Over the years, the field of Sleep Medicine had undergone enormous expansion in clinical and basic knowledge, as well as in the field-related technology. Sleep disorders are becoming more recognized, and their detrimental effects on health and society are clearly established. The intention of the Sleep Medicine & Polysomnography Course was to function as a forum to educate, alert, share and compare experiences, in order to outline both appropriate detection and treatment. Both technical and medical teams comprised the lecturing committee, thus facilitating the delivery of a clearer picture of sleep disorders.
Participants including physicians, nurses, and sleep technicians, met at the Sleep Medicine and Polysomnography Course, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia earlier this month. Being the first of its kind, course organizers included a number of introductory topics in order to familiarize attendees with the different aspects of sleep medicine.
A number of consultants and professors were also invited to talk about diseases encountered in the field of sleep medicine, including talks about normal sleep physiology and how it is affected by aging, insomnia, sleep related breathing disorders in both adults and in children, sleep related movement disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, effects of different medications and diseases on polysomnographic results, and parasomnias.
To highlight polysomnography, three American board certified sleep technologists including an international sleep technologist educator, and the founder of four sleep centers worldwide, by the name of Glenn Roldan, were invited for giving talks mainly on polysomnography and how it is scoredas well as organizing workshops to provide participants with hands-on training.
This course was accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties for twenty six Continuous Medical Educational hours, the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists for twenty nine Continuing Sleep Technology Educational hours, and the American Association for Respiratory Care for twenty seven and three quarters Continuing Respiratory Care Educational hours.
